The Rideau 150 Citizen's Committee was established in May 1980 in collaboration with Parks Canada to prepare events in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Rideau Canal. . Patrick Watson and Cameron Graham were national co-chairmen, with regional chairs in the Northern Area (Georges Bédard), Central Area (F.C.L. Wyght) and Southern Area (Neil A. Patterson) of the Rideau Canal. The Central and Southern Areas also had vice-chairpersons for various cities and municipalities along the canal. The Southern Area extended from Narrows to Kingston.

Following his honorable discharge from the Royal Canadian Navy at the end of World War II, D.G. (Mike) Willis ran his father's store in Seeley's Bay until 1959, when he operated an aerial photography company known as Rideau Aerial Photography, in partnership with his brother-in-law, Jack Wyatt. He did much contract and commercial work. His business took him down to the Maritimes and out to Western Canada, although much was concentrated in Eastern Ontario. Flying mostly out of Seeley's Bay, a small town approximately twenty minutes north of Kingston, his aerial images provide a stunning and detailed record of an area from Belleville to Brockville to Smiths Falls in particular, and includes all points in between. Although now retired, D.G. (Mike) Willis is still active in a number of personal pursuits, including a detailed study of the archaeological record of the region around Kingston, and the local lapidary association.

Created in 1971, the Rideau Trail Association (RTA) is a non-profit organization which maintains a 300 kilometer trail and promotes hiking. The RTA consists of three local clubs -- Kingston, Ottawa, and Central (Perth). These clubs sponsor day hikes and other outdoor activities. The Association publishes a quarterly newsletter which keeps members informed of activities and contains articles of common interest.

Tommy Riedel was a blacksmith at Willowbank Forge in Bath, Ontario. He was married to Isabelle Palmer.

A Metis leader, Louis Riel was born in the Red River Settlement in 1844 and educated at St. Boniface and Montreal. Riel, a passionate defender of the Metis, advocated guarantees for their land, language and political rights. His leadership inspired the creation of Manitoba as Canada's fifth province on July 15, 1870. Riel was elected three times to the House of Commons, which twice expelled him for his role in the Red River Resistance of 1869-70. Forced into exile in 1875, Riel lived in hiding in Manitoba and Quebec before moving to the United States. In 1884, he was invited by people in the North-West Territories to return and lead them in petitioning Canada to recognize their land and rights as indigenous people of the North-West Territories. This has become known as the North-West Rebellion. In 1885, Riel was charged with high treason by the Canadian Government and was subsequently convicted and hanged in Regina on November 16, 1885. His body was returned to Manitoba by the Metis and buried at the St. Boniface Basilica.
In 1992, the Parliament of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba formally recognized Riel's contribution to the development of the Canadian Confederation and his role, and that of the Metis, as founder of Manitoba.
