Painter, draughtsman, illustrator, muralist, teacher. William Brymner, born at Greenock, Scotland, on December 14th, 1855. Son of Dr Douglas Brymner, the first Dominion archivist. He was brought by his family to Melbourne, in the Eastern Townships, Quebec, in 1857. He later studied architecture with the chief government architect at Council of Arts and Manufactures, Montreal, 1868-1869. He went to Paris in 1878 and turned to painting, studying at Julian's and with Carolus-Duran in Paris. Brymner became a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) in 1886 and in the same year became Director of classes at the Art Association of Montreal, a position he held until 1921. Brymner is considered the first great teacher of painting in Canada, and is admired for his respect for academic training and his great receptiveness to the talents of others. He had the admiration of his students and would become a major influence on the development of Canadian painting. He died at Wallasey, Cheshire on June 18, 1925.

John Strange (1788-1840), emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland in 1814 to America, eventually becoming a merchant at Kingston, Upper Canada. He married Mary McGill of Albany, New York. They had two sons Maxwell William, M.L.A. (1820-1880) and Orlando Sampson, M.D. (b. June 13, 1826, d. 1909). Orlando Sampson Strange was educated at Queen's College, and as a physician (through apprenticeship). He married Miss Emily Maclean of Kingston in 1849, with whom he had eight children, six of whom survived childhood. Orlando occupied many civic positions including: surgeon of Kingston General Hospital, alderman (1852-1854) and Mayor (1859-1860) for the Town of Kingston, surgeon for the A Battery stationed at Kingston (a position from which he was removed on account of his politics). Maxwell William Strange was called to the bar in 1845. He was a politician in addition to being a lawyer, representing Kingston in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1867 to 1871 as a Conservative member. He was also a justice of the peace, police magistrate and vice-president of the Commercial Bank. He married Charlotte Anna Campbell in 1849. They had seven children.

The Dickey Family, as documented by these records, begins with John Dickey, 1795-1851, who emmigrated from Ireland to Canada in the late 1820's. He became a school teacher and later a Presbyterian clergyman. His son, James Dickey, became a prosperous farmer and politician in the Williamsburg area. John Sutherland Dickey, the son of James Dickey, became a school teacher and later a medical doctor.

Edith Chown, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Chown of Kingston, was born on September 13, 1890. Her mother died in 1896 and Edith and her three brothers were brought up in Kingston by their maternal grandmother and by their aunt, Charlotte Conley.
Edtih graduated from Queen's University in 1912 and attended normal school in Regina. For several years she taught school in the West. While at Queen's University she met Lorne Pierce. They graduated in the same year, and met again when both were in the West, where Lorne was serving as a Minister. On September 9, 1916, they were married. They had two children, Beth (Mrs. J. D. Robinson) and Bruce.
Edith Pierce died on April 23, 1954.
