Gardiner, James Garfield

James Garfield Gardiner, born in 1883 at Farquhar, Ont., received his education from Manitoba College, Winnipeg, B.A. He became a farmer at Lemberg, Sask., and Principal of Lemberg Continuation School. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan for the electoral division of North Qu'Appelle, 1941-1934, and for Melville, 1934-1935, during which time he held the offices of Minister of Highways (1922-1926), Premier (1926-1929, 1934-1935), Minister of Railways (1926-1927), Minister of Education (1927-1929), and Provincial Treasurer (1926-1927, 1934-1935). Mr. Gardiner was also Leader of the Opposition in the legislative Assembly from 1929-1934. He was a Member of the House of Commons from 1936 to 1958 serving as Member of the Privy Council (1935), Minister of Agriculture (1935-1957), Minister of War Services (1940-1941), and Member of the Imperial Privy Council (1947).

Henderson, Andrew Maxwell

Andrew Maxwell Henderson was born in Carshalton, Surrey, England on 24 March, 1908. After education at Mill Hill School, London, and Rollins College, Florida, he became a chartered accountant in Halifax in 1929. He married Beatrice Johnstone Maltby, a Toronto artist, on June 1, 1935 and they had one son, David J. Henderson, C.A. After a number of years with various agencies including C.B.C. (comptroller, 1958-60) Henderson was appointed Auditor General of Canada in 1960 by Prime Minister Diefenbaker and served under Prime Ministers Lester Pearson and Pierre Trudeau until his retirement in 1973. In 1974-1975 he served as administrator, and later a director of the Royal Ontario Museum and as a member of the Special Programme Review for the Ontario government. While Auditor General he participated widely as Canadian representative in international organizations: the Board of Auditors of the United Nations where he undertook several projects and studies, the Conference of Commonwealth Auditors General , and the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) where he served as president in 1971. Maxwell Henderson passed away in 1997 at the age of 89.

Jones, William Alfred

Dr. William Alfred Jones was born in Aisla Craig, Ontario in 1892. He graduated in medicine at the University of Western Ontario. He worked at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario for forty-one years. He was a professor of radiology and also worked at Kingston General Hospital as Chief of the Radiological Service. Upon retiring from the University in 1960, he continued in private practice. Dr. Jones served in both World Wars and received the O.B.E., V. D., C. D. and was a Commander of the Order of Saint John. He also served as president of both the Ontario Medical Association and the Canadian Association of Radiologists. Dr. William Alfred Jones died on September 24 1974.

Phipps-Walker, Margaret Elizabeth

Margaret Elizabeth Elliot was believed to be born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Throughout her residency in the Kingston area she was an active participant in the affairs of the Kingston community. She was particularly active in the Association of Women Electors. Her passion for municipal politics resulted in her campaigning for the position of alderwoman in the 1970 Sydenham Ward election. She was also an active member of the New Democratic party in Kingston.

In addition to her political activities, Margaret Phipps-Walker was involved in several other community organizations. She was president of the Victorian Order of Nurses, Eastern Lake Ontario branch, for three years during which time she helped initiate the home care plan. She was also involved with the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.). Margaret Phipps-Walker also served as regional coordinator for the "MEND" project, a committee that was set up to foster the needs and interests of emotionally and mentally disturbed children.

On November 30, 1991, Margaret Phipps-Walker died in Kingston.

Taylor, Kenneth Wiffin

Kenneth Wiffin Taylor (1899-1975) was born at Takutang Ki, China, receiving his early education at the China Inland Mission Schools at Chefoo, China. From 1917 to 1919 he served with the Canadian Field Artillery. In 1921 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from McMaster University and in 1922 he graduated from the University of Chicago with a Master of Arts degree. From 1925 to 1939 he was Professor of Political Economy at McMaster Unversity, during the last five years of which he was Associate Dean of Arts. Throughout the next few years Taylor held various posts in government departments and related work. From 1929 to 1951 he held various positions with the wartime Prices and Trade Board including Secretary, Administrator, Deputy Minister and Chairman. In 1947 he was appointed Assistant Deputy Minister of the federal department of Finance and in 1953 became the Deputy Minister. Upon his retirement as Deputy Minister of Finance in 1963 he was Special Adviser to the Privy Council. Taylor died in 1975.
