Simon Oberndorffer was born in Bretten, Germany circa 1826. At 18 he immigrated to New York where he stayed for eight or nine year before arriving in Kingston around 1857. In New York, Oberndorffer had learned the trade of cigar making. Oberndorffer operated a cigar company in Kingston until his death in 1913. Both he and his German-born wife Cecelia (married in 1867) were pillars of the Kingston community and instrumental in the establishment of a synagogue for the local Jewish congregation. Together they had 12 children, eight of whom survived into adulthood. Oberndorffer was a member of many fraternal organizations, such as the Oddfellows and the Masons. He also served on City Council as the alderman for Cataraqui Ward in 1892.

Oberon Press

  • 1967-

During the early 1960s, the Ottawa literary scene was diffuse until, in 1967, Michael Macklem launched Oberon Press. Publishing a wide spectrum of Canadian poets and novelists, Oberon remains one of only a few presses which survived the 1960s. Oberon, unlike many other small publishing houses, does not print its own books. The text work and printing are done in England to take advantage of cheaper production costs. Oberon is a trade publisher. Dr. Macklem selects and edits manuscripts for publication. Ann Hardy (Mrs. Macklem) is responsible for promotional campaigns and sales. Oberon publishes once a year and normally issues six to eight books. Dr. and Mrs. Macklem also handle the sales and distribution of Oberon's publications.
