Howard Phillip Lovecraft, American poet and author of macabre short novels, was born at Providence, Rhode Island, in 1890. During his lifetime Lovecraft remained virtually unknown. It was only after his death in 1937 that Lovecraft gained recognition. Lovecraft's posthumous fame, particularly in America and France, rests on his 'Cthulhu Mythos' stories and he has become a cult figure in the genre of horror fiction. He is considered the most original American writer of weird fiction subsequent to Edgar Allan Poe. Lovecraft's imaginary town in his tales, Arkham, was based on his home town of Providence

The Glenburnie Residents' Association (GRA) was formed in 1985, in response to the Township of Kingston's plan to built a garbage dump in the Glenburnie area. By early 1986, and following numerous public meetings of concerned residents, an executive (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer) was elected, a constitution adopted, and the GRA was established.
In addition to a Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer, the volunteer executive of the GRA includes eight (8) area representatives, plus Chairs of a number of working committees. It is estimated over eighty (80) local residents have held executive positions. The GRA reports to local residents through periodic newsletters, and at the Annual General Meeting. The Executive met as issues arose. A special working group of the Executive met regularly to draft submissions and responses to the City/Township Steering Committee, or other forums, prepared agendas for its own meetings, and generally looked after the day to day work of the GRA. When major presentations were made, as to Draft Stage 2, the Diversions Reports, or the Compensation Policy, members of the Executive were assisted by members at large, who undertook to research and draft part, or all, of the responses.
The GRA began to make formal presentations to Kingston Township Council concerning what was then the "Waste Management Study", at the end of December 1985. Since that time, the original "Study Plan" became the "Waste Management Master Plan", and the City of Kingston joined tha process. The purpose of the GRA remained fundamentally the same. For the next eight or nine years, representatives attended meetings of the KingstonTownship Council, at which garbage issues were discussed, and since 1987, they attended and spoke at every Waste Managemnt Master Plan Steering Committeee meeting. In addition to monitoring developments, the GRA also raised questions and concerns about both the planning process and the actual proposals on how to manage waste.
In 1988, it responded in detail to the Draft Stage 2 Report, and over the years made reprsentations to the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, and the Steering Committee on Waste Management, and to planning generally on the need for a real diversion program on the question of siting and sizing of a landfill site and other issues of concern to community residents and to residents in the Kimngston area as a whole.
The GRA represents all residents in the Glenburnie community. Based on the distribution of letters, it was estimated that there were over 650 households in aera. Most of these have donated funds to the GRA over time; many of them regularly attended the Annual General Meeting, and also came out to public meetings hosted by the GRA, consultants, or the City/Township of Kingston.
Members of the Executive and community donated hundreds of hours to perparing submissions, attending meetings, and generally representing the interests of the Glenburnie community. Many also made siginificant financial contributions and/or provided their own personal resources (computer time, paper, telephone calls, car mileage) to the work of the GRA. The only public funding received was assistance from Kingston Township to hire a hydrogeologist, and to consult a solicitor concerning the Compensation Policy. All other requirements, with respect to time, supplies, energy, and money were met by the organization's budget, or personal and financial contributions from interested and concerned residents.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1949, Merilyn Simonds spent her childhood in Brazil and was educated at the University of Western Ontario. She has worked as a freelance writer, a magazine editor for Harrowsmith and This Country Canada and, since 1991, has devoted herself to full-time writing. She has published ten books and scores of magazine articles on subjects ranging from the environment to soap-making, from art to war, including the book accompaniment to the controversial CBC television documentary The Valour and the Horror. She has taught several literary non-fiction courses and has been a regular on CBC Radio's Basic Black.

With the release of The Convict Lover, published by Macfarlane, Walter & Ross in 1996, Simonds became nationally known as a literary writer. The Convict Lover was nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction and was chosen as one of the top ten nonfiction books of 1996 by the Globe and Mail, Quill & Quire Magazine, Elm Street Magazine and Maclean’s. It was translated into Chinese, Japanese, and German, and in 1997, was adapted for the stage by the Kingston Summer Theatre Festival, premiering at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto in the fall of 1998. Also in 1996, from September to December, Simonds served as the Writer in Residence at Green College, University of British Columbia.

The Lion in the Room Next Door, Simonds’s collection of linked, autobiographical stories, was published in Canada by McClelland & Stewart in 1999 and became a national bestseller. The following year, it was published by Bloomsbury in England, by G.P. Putnam’s Sons in the United States and by btb in Germany.

The Holding is Simonds's first novel. Published by McClelland & Stewart in the spring of 2004, it was on the Canadian Booksellers' Association bestseller list for five months. In the fall of 2005 it was published in the United States, where it was selected a New York Times "Editor's Choice." The novel was released in Germany in 2007.

Simonds has edited two anthologies: Gardens: A Literary Companion (2008) and Night: A Literary Companion (2009). In 2010 a travel memoir, jointly authored with Wayne Grady, called Breakfast at the Exit Cafe: Travels through America was published. A selection of flash fictions from her work-in-progress The Paradise Project was recently featured in the Journal of the Americas special issue on contemporary Canadian writing.

Simonds lives with writer Wayne Grady on a small acreage north of Kingston. She has two sons by an earlier marriage — Karl, a musician, and Erik, a visual artist whose painting is on the cover of the original Canadian edition of The Lion in the Room Next Door.

The Pritchard family established their business at Wyman, Quebec in the 19th century. Originally the small village was known as Billerica until the C.P.R. arrived and the name was changed to Wyman. Mr. James M. Pritchard (1847-1889) established the family business, a general store, which became the centre of the village. When Mr. Pritchard died suddenly, his wife, pregnant with her fourth child, took over management of the family business, now officially know as E.A. Pritchard. Eventually her son, William Frederick Pritchard (1879- 1953) took over. William Frederick was also the local postmaster and stationmaster.He was assisted periodically at the store by his sister Abbie Stewart Pritchard (1887-1960). Abbie's main interest, however, was the Women's Institute in which movement she became quite prominent. The business was taken over by the Dodds family in 1944 when Fred Pritchard became ill. In 1969 the modernized store was destroyed by fire.

Allan Macnab Jones (1847-c.1930) of Prescott was for a number of years employed in the Post Office at various locations including Kingston where he was an inspector from 1879-1895. After a period in Barrie he returned to his family home in Prescott where he carried on business as "Allan Jones Lumber" until about 1920.

John E. Nelligan was born 19 June 1920. He entered Queen's University and graduated in 1942, with a B.Sc. (Chem.). John Nelligan served in the Canadian army in World War II, but returned to Queen's to earn a second B.Sc. (Met.) in 1948.
