Captain David James Ballingall (1798-1864) was commanding officer of the Woolwich Division of the Royal Marines. He was stationed at the naval dockyard in Kingston in 1841.

Dr. Leonard Gascoigne Berry (1914-1982) was professor emeritus of Mineralogy and Crystallography at Queen's from 1945 to 1980, after graduating from the University of Toronto. From 1950 to 1975 he was editor of the Canadian Mineralogist, official publication of the Mineralogical Association of Canada. The Association honoured him by publication of a special "Berry Issue" in 1976 and in 1982 awarded him the first Past President's Medal.
At various times Dr. Berry was President of the Mineralogical Society of America, fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, honorary fellow of the Mineralogical Society of Britain and honorary fellow of the Soviet Mineralogy Society. The royal Society of Canada awarded him with the Willet G. Miller gold medal and ths Canadian Jubilee medal.
Dr. Berry was known for his work with Martin Peacock in sulphides and sulphesalts and his interest in characterization of materials by x-ray diffraction methods led to his association with the Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards which continued until his death in 1982.

André Biéler, an artist and Professor of Art, was born in Switzerland in 1896 and died at Kingston, Ontario in 1990. In 1908 the family came to Canada where his father became a Professor of Theology for francophone students at Montreal's Presbyterian College. Biéler attended Westmount Academy, Stanstead College, and entered L'Institut Technique de Montréal.
He enlisted in the Armed Forces in 1915 and served until 1919 when he returned to Canada. The following year he entered the Art Students League in Woodstock, New York and in 1921 left to study in Europe with his uncle, Ernest. After he returned to Canada in 1926, he painted for some time on the Ilê d'Orléans. In 1931, Biéler married Jeannette Meunier of Montreal, an interior decorator. The following year he began to offer studio art classes in Montreal. His teaching and painting continued until 1936, when he was offered an appointment to teach art at Queen's University. He was a principal organizer of the Kingston Conference of Canadian Artists in 1941. From this emerged the Federation of Canadian Artists of which he was the first President. Dr. Biéler was resident Artist and Professor, Department of Art, Queen's University for twenty-seven years. During this time he established the Summer School of Fine Art at the University in 1942, and was instrumental in the planning of Agnes Etherington Art Centre, established in 1957, of which he was its first director.
André Biéler continued to paint and remained involved with the Art Centre. In 1963, he was named Man of the Year by the Kingston Junior Chamber of Commerce for his development and promotion of the Art Cantre.In 1967, he was awarded a Centennial Medal and in 1969, an LL.D from Queen's. His retirement was an active one, with continued creation of artistic works.

Dr. Kathryn Bindon, historian, was born in 1949. Dr. Bindon received a PhD in History from Queen's University in 1979 where she also completed her Master's degree. She received her undergraduate degree from Concordia University and has a diploma from the National Defence College in Kingston. Dr. Bindon has a broad background in post-secondary education. She was appointed as Principal of Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in 1991, and was Vice President (Academic) at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax from 1987 to 1991. She has written extensively on issues related to the Canadian Armed Forces and is a regular reviewer for The Historian. She has authored several publications on military history, and has been named an Honorary Captain in the Canadian Navy. Dr. Katy Bindon assumed the presidency of Okanagan University College on November 1, 1997.

Dr. Eldon M. Boyad was a professor of pharmacology, Queen's University, Kingston, Ont from 1934-1972. He was the first president of the Pharmacological Society of Canada. The Eldon Boyd Graduate Fellowship at Queen's University is named after him.

Herbert Alexander Bruce was born at Blackstock, Ontario in 1868. After several years working in a drugstore, he enrolled in the School of Medicine, University of Toronto and graduated in 1892 at the head of his class. He obtained his M.D. in 1893 and went on to further study in England (1894-1896) where he received his Fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons. Returning to Toronto in 1897 to begin his own surgical practice , he was appointed Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery at University of Toronto, later becoming full Professor and, in 1930, Professor Emeritus. After retiring from active practice in 1932 Dr. Bruce pursued a career in politics. From 1932 to 1937 he was Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario and in 1940 was elected as Member of Parliament for the Toronto riding of Parkdale, serving in the House of Commons until 1946.
Dr. Bruce was interested in a wide range of social issues including housing, birth control and medical education and in 1958 he wrote his autobiography, Varied Operations. He died in 1963. He was survived by his wife and his son, Maxwell.
