Gustafson, Ralph Barker

Ralph Barker Gustafson, poet and professor, was born at Lime Ridge, Quebec on August 16, 1909. He was educated at Bishop's University, earning a B.A. (1st class honours and winner of the Governor General's medal along with many other awards) in 1929 and an M.A. in 1930. He also completed a B.A. at Oxford in 1933, an M.A. in 1963, and has been awarded a D. Litt. from Mount Allison in 1973, a D.C.L. from Bishop's University in 1977, and a D. Litt from York University in 1991. Over the years Dr. Gustafson has held a number of posts. He was music master, Bishop's College School, 1920-30; teacher of English St. Alban's School for Boys, Brockville, Ontario, 1933-34; tutor and journalist, London, England, 1935-38; British Information Services, New York, N.Y., 1942-46; Professor and Poet-In-Residence, Bishop's University, 1963-79 and music critic, C.B.C., since 1960.Winner of a number of awards, including the Order of Canada and the Governor General's Award for Poetry, Dr. Gustafson has written over twenty volumes of poetry and prose as well as editing several anthologies of verse. He died in 1995.

Finnigan, Joan

Poet and author, Joan Finnigan was born Helen Joan MacKenzie, in Ottawa, on 23 November 1925. She was educated at Lisgar Collegiate, Carleton University, and Queen's University where she obtained a B.A. in 1967. Her writing career began at Lisgar Collegiate as contributor and editor of the school magazine. After one year in the journalism course at Carleton she went to work for the Ottawa Journal as general reporter. After her marriage to Grant MacKenzie, eighteen years of free-lance writing followed. Her film script, "The Best Damn Fiddler from Calabogie to Kaladar," won nine awards at the Canadian Film Awards in 1960. Her published work includes "A Dream of Lilies," "Entrance To The Greenhouse," and "It Was Warm and Sunny When We Set Out."

Broadus, Edmund Kemper

Edmund Kemper Broadus was born on August 27, 1876 in Alexandria, Virginia, to parents Sarah Jane (Botts) and Thomas Andrew Broadus. HE received a BA from Columbian College (1897), an MA from the University of Chicago (1900), and a PhD from Harvard University (1908). Before joining the University of Alberta as a professor of English in 1908, Broadus worked as a professor at John B. Stetson University in Deland, Florida (1900-03), the University of South Dakota (1903-06), and Harvard University (1906-08). Broadus was a professor of English from 1908-36. In 1919, he also served as an interim lecturer of English at Trinity College, Oxford University. In recognition of his achievements, Broadus received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree (LLD honoris causa) from the University of Alberta in 1933. In 1934-36, he was elected a Member of the Royal Society of Canada.
Broadus married Eleanor Hammond in 1900; they had a son, Kemper Hammond. Broadus passed away December 17, 1936 in Edmonton, Alberta.
