Emily Gowan Murphy was born 14 March 1868 and died 17 October 1933. She was a Canadian women's rights activist, jurist, anti-drug crusader and author. In 1916, she became the first woman magistrate in Canada and the British Empire. She is best known for her contributions to Canadian feminism, specifically to the question of whether women were "persons" under Canadian law and for her "Janey Canuck" series of articles and books.
