The Dion dit Dumontier family (originally Guyon dit Dumontier) originated in Perche, France, and landed in Canada in 1620, establishing themselves at Chateau Richer near Quebec City. Louis Dion dit Dumontier established his family on a farm at St. Barthelemi, Quebec.

Dinsdale, Walter Gilbert

Born in Brandon, Manitoba, he graduated from Brandon College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1937 from McMaster University. He received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1951.

Dinsdale was a Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) from 1951 until his death in 1982. During his tenure in the Canadian House of Commons, he represented the electoral riding of Brandon for one year in 1951 until it was merged with the electoral riding of Souris, and represented the merged riding of Brandon—Souris from 1952 until his death in 1982.

During his period as MP, he was the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Veterans Affairs in 1957 and, Parliamentary Secretary to the same minister in 1960. He then joined the Cabinet of John Diefenbaker as Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources from 1960 to 1963. He was also Acting Minister of Mines and Technical Surveys for a few months in 1961.

Prior to entering politics, Dinsdale was a social worker with the Salvation Army and, from 1946 to 1951, the Director of Adult Education and Assistant Professor of Social Services at Brandon College. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross during World War II for his service as a de Havilland Mosquito night-fighter pilot with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

He died from kidney failure in 1982 after suffering a stroke about two months before his death. He was married to Lenore and had five children: Gunnar, Gregory, Elizabeth, Eric and Rolf.

Diesel, Rudolf

German engineer, born in Paris, studied at the Munich Polytechnic. Set about constructing a "rational heat motor," demonstrating the first compression engine in 1897, after solving the problem of feul injection into the cylinder head against enormous pressures by devising a special pump. He spent most of his life at his factory at Augsburg until he vanished from an English channel steamer in September 1913.

Diefenbaker, John George

John George Diefenbaker (1895-1979) was born in Neustadt, Ontario. In 1903 the family moved to a homestead in the Fort Carlton area of the Northwest Territories but eventually settled in Saskatoon in 1910. John studied at the University of Saskatchewan receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree (1915), Master of Arts (1916) and Bachelor of Law (1919). He enlisted in 1916 and served in England until 1917. He established his first law practice in Prince Albert in 1924 and continued to practice law until 1957.
John Diefenbaker first entered politics in 1917. From 1936 to 1941 he served as leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal-Conservative Party and in 1940 was elected to the federal government as a member for the Lake Centre riding. From 1953 he represented the Prince Albert riding. On 14 December, 1956, Diefenbaker was selected as leader of the Conservative Party and he became Prime Minister in 1957. His government was defeated in the 1963 federal election and thereafter he served as Leader of the Opposition until his defeat in 1967. he continued to represent the Prince Albert riding until his death in 1979.
