Dexter, Alexander Grant

Alexander Grant Dexter was born in St. Andrews, Manitoba on February 3, 1896. Educated at the Collegiate Institute in Hamilton, Ontario, and at Brandon College, Manitoba, he joined the staff of the "Winnipeg Free Press" in 1912, and after serving in WWI from 1915-1919, he became the Ottawa Correspondent for the "Free Press" in 1923. He was the "Free Press' correspondent in London, England, for 2 years, returning to Ottawa in 1938. For some years he was Canadian correspondent for the "Manchester Guardian" and other British and American publications. He became Associate Editor of the "Free Press" in 1944, and was Executive Editor from 1946 to 1948, becoming Editor in 1948. Awarded the Cabot Medal for journalism by Columbia University in 1946, he was author of "Canada and the Building of the Post-War World," 1946, and also numerous pamphlets. He collaborated in various studies dealing with Canadian problems. He died on December 12, 1961, in Winnipeg.

Dewart, Edward Hartley

Edward Hartley Dewart was born on 30 March 1828 in Ireland, the son of James and Margaret Hartley Dewart. When he was six the family immigrated to Canada. Edward was educated in the local Ontario schools of Dummer Township and at the Provincial Normal School. He taught briefly before entering the church. He was ordained into the Wesleyan Methodist ministry in 1855. The following year he married Matilda Hunt, and they apparently had three sons. For twenty-five years, from 1869 to 1894, he edited the Christian Guardian , the Methodists' weekly newspaper in Toronto. He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the Methodist-sponsored Victoria University in 1879. He was still writing columns for the Christian Guardian up until his death.

Devlin, Patrick

Patrick Devlin was originally from Ireland. He made his first appearance in the Kingston area as a land holder on Wolfe Island in 1845 with the lease of the west half of lot eight in the ninth concession from the Kirkpatrick family. By 1885 Devlin had purchased the entirety of lot eight. In 1861 he purchased the south west quarter of lot five in the tenth concession, as well, Devlin purchased two lots in the village of Marysville in 1867 and 1869.
Devlin and his wife Elizabeth had two daughters: Mary Jane and Rosella. Both girls received their education at St. Mary's of the Lake and later at the Loretto Convent in Belleville. Mary Jane became a sister at the Convent, Sister Mary Lucretia (Leocrita?), and Rosella died, unmarried, in 1890.
Patrick Devlin died January 9, 1885.
