Dickens (1812-70) was born near Portsmouth, England, the son of a dockyard clerk. He was largely self-educated. He eventually got a job as a reporter and in 1833 wrote a series of articles for 'Monthly Magazine' under the signature 'Boz'. They were followed by 'Pickwick Papers','Oliver Twist' and a succession of other best selling novels.
