Biographical history

The Reverend Dr. Donald M. Mathers (1921-1972) was born in Monifieth, Scotland and attended the University of St, Andrews (M.A. 1942, B.D. 1949) where he was a student of Donald Baillie. During the Second World War he served with the British Army in Germany, France and Holland. After studying in the United States at Columbia and Union Theological Seminary, he came to Queen's in 1953 where he served as Principal, Queen's Theological College. As well as being a stimulating teacher Dr. Mathers was known as a theologian, ecumenist and author. While at Queen's, Dr. Mathers wrote several books on religion including The Word and The Way, and The Future of Philosophical Theology and Belief. His untimely death in 1972 was the result of leukemia.
