Biographical history

Frank Albert Knox, born (c.1895), was a native of Orono, Ontario. After graduating from Queen's in 1923 in History and Economics he went on to graduate studies. A year later, he was called back to Queen's where he began a teaching career that was to span some forty years. Although he did do graduate studies at both Harvard and the University of Chicago he never completed a graduate degree. It seems that whenever he became involved in his graduate work, he was called upon to complete some more pressing task and had to give it up.
Professor Knox served for many years as head of the Economics Department at Queen's, he was the editor of The Journal of the Canadian Banker's Association, chairman of the Committee of Inquiry into the Economics of the Gold Mining Industry and contributed to numerous other studies, reports and papers. He was an expert on international trade and a well remembered and appreciated University teacher. In 1964 he was awarded an honorary LL.D. from the University of Toronto and received a second one from Queen's in 1965. He was a member of the Royal Society of Canada and the student award for excellence in teaching was named the Frank Knox Award. Dr. Knox died in Kingston on January 25, 1976 at the age of 81.

Custodial history

Scope and content

Fonds consists of correspondence, research files, lecture notes, examination questions and background notes on pre-1896 balance of payments. Among the more interesting files in this collection are a whole series showing various ways capital flows to and from Canada based on figures drawn largely from the 1914-26 period. For most of the early 1940's Knox's work reveals his interest in war finance and post war recovery but there are also files on something called the Book Binder's Arbitration. After the war there are files on a Hyde Park Conference, Bretton Woods, the European League for Economic Co-operation and the Commonwealth Conference of 1951. Two other interesting files are the one of the Royal Society Selection Committee of 1948-9 and another on a 'Proposed Association of Canadian University Teachers'.

Arrangement

The Frank Albert Knox Fonds was placed in Queen's Archives during the 1970's and have remained undisturbed until this inventory was prepared in 1992. Apparently Professor Knox did spend some little time, on at least two occasions, trying to put the Fonds in order and some parts had an established order when they were created. As a result, there were several different established orders, some of which conflicted with each other and still much of the material remained unsorted. Given this state of affairs it was decided to integrate the whole collection into one established order. Whenever possible, though, the original file names were used. Any file titles created in the Archives are enclosed in square brackets.
