Biographical history

Horatio Nelson Garrett was the fifth or eight children born to William Robert and Abigail Garrett. William Robert Garrett owned a ditillery and brewery on King Street as well as a number of properties about town, and upon his death Horatio seems to have been placed in charge of the management of the rather large estate. Upon Horatio's death on July 17, 1871, the estate was managed by the Kirkpatrick Nickle law firm for a number of years.

Custodial history

This sous-fonds forms part of the Kirkpatrick-Nickle legal collection. The documents came from the law firm of Nickle and Nickle, which was founded by Thomas Kirkpatrick in 1828, and which continued under various names (Kirkpatrick Nickle) and with various partners until 1968. The Horatio Nelson Garrett estate papers were deposited, along with the papers of other clients of the firm, in Queen's University Archives during the 1960's.

Scope and content

The sous-fonds consists of legal papers pertaining to the estate of both William Robert Garrett and his son Horatio Nelson Garrett over a 60 year period, as well as various other family members such as Harriet Cushman, Lydia Anne Thirkell, Marcia Vaughn. The papers predominantly consist of leases, correspondence, transfers, bargain & sale, insurance, and maintenance records for various properties owned by the Garretts around the city of Kingston. This includes: waterfront lot at the base of Gordon Street at King; the premises on the southwesterly side of Market Square known as the "Queen's Arms"; properties in the Clergy reserve of Block G; Town Lots 23 and 24; Lot 18 in the 2nd Concession in the Township of Kingston; and store property on Princess Street. Of particular note are plans and drawings for a number of these properties by Kilborne and D. Williams, surveyors.
