This sous-fonds is a modest record of a the typical pioneer success story, following the fortunes of a son of an illiterate Irish immigrant to some financial success and civic respect in Kingston's early years. Although not documenting William's many careers as butcher, alderman, contractor or family man, the financial papers reflect his affairs in connection with his properties, his debtors, his stocks, his estate and the estate of his second wife, Amelia.

Browne and Harty estate sous-fonds

The sous-fonds was comprised of documents brought together as a result of the law suit of Browne v. Dollard in Chancery, 1872, which involved the winding up of the partnership. Included are business papers, business correspondence regarding land lots, and a number of land documents involving various land lots in the Kingston area.

Dennis Lake estate sous-fonds

The land papers in this sous-fonds trace the changes in ownership of various lots, often from the original Crown grants. The business papers reflect interest rates, rents, assessments and taxes, school tuition, wages paid for work on the farm and the clearing of land. The prices of various household commodities, receipts for carding and fulling, invoices for spinning and weaving, and for tailoring, give interesting information about household life during the main span of years covered, 1832 to 1874.

Edward H. Horsey estate sous-fonds

The sous-fonds is comprised of the dealings involved with the estates of both Edward Horsey and Theresa Haven. The papers cover the period from 1870-1900 with the majority dated in the 1880's and early 1890's. There are a few documents, such as the original deed to the Craig property, that date much earlier. For the most part the papers are financial records, such as mortgages and leases, investment statements and inventories of current and fixed assets. Also included are several instances of litigation concerning the Haven-Horsey estate. The correspondence is mainly between Mrs. Horsey-Curtis and Byron Britton (the lawyer) and deals with financial and legal matters. Finally, there are several wills from Mrs. Haven and Mrs. Horsey-Curtis.

This sous-fonds includes records which reflect the life of a young man of means: bills for clothing, books, cigars, hotels, pool and billiards.There are also records that pertain to his financial dealings regarding the properties that he owned in Kingston (including a floor plan for a house on William Street) and the Chancery case in which he was a defendent. There are a number of documents pertaining to properties in and around Kingston, including Lot 24 of the City of Kingston. There is also correspondence with the Hospital Superintendent which documents the personal hospital-patient relationships that occured in that era.

Herbert Charles Voigt estate sous-fonds

The sous fonds consists of two series covering bankruptcy cases from 1864 to 1874 in the Kingston area. The first series consists of procedural material and contains a few files of Voight's accounts, sample forms, bills for advertising creditor's meetings and samples of his office filing systems. The second series conatins files for 27 major cases of bankruptcy and one file for a minor case. The cases cover various types of businesses such as: furniture dealer, tinsmith, plumber, merchants, a brewery owner and farmers. In each case the name and date of the cases are listed and the occupation, when know. Included in each case file is the official claim, notice from creditors and occasionally inventories or insurance policies that give descriptions of the business and premises involved.
