Images of Books for Prisons. This initiative was the result of Brig. C.D Quilliam closing his bookstore on Brock Street In March 1956. He decided that any remaining books that were not sold would be distributed to the libraries of Kingston's three penitentiaries (Kingston Penitentiary, Collins Bay Penitentiary and the Prison for Women) and the Frontenac County Jail. Librarians from those institutions were invited to choose books from the bookstore after it closed its doors to the public. (Information found in Kingston Whig Standard, March 17 1956, p.15)
Fonds consists of approximately 20,000 negatives documenting events and people in Kingston and district during the period from the late 1940's to the early 1960's. The fonds has very large sections devoted to Queen's University, Canadian Industries Limited, Fort Henry, and military establishments in Kingston. Also many significant national and international new events are covered.
From Box: "Transparencies here in are concerned with Excercise " TribulatioN", held during June, July, August of 1963 at Camp Gagetown by 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade Group under command of Brig. A.J.B. Bailey of CFB Pettawawa.Code-named "Tribulation" the exercise was actually a series of "circus" exercises (Ex Shrike, Loou, Teru, etc.) to familiarize the units with the battleground, and which culminated in a week-long battle utilizing the whole exercize area of Camp Gagetown.
