Don't Civilize Our Indians

  • Photograph is of a group of seven Cree women and children around a tepee. Ther are in a landscape with mountains in the background. There are various bits of snow shoes and sleds and wood in the foreground. The caption given by the photographer is as follows:
  • Half-civilized they congregate near the growing assortment of posts and commence to ape white men in food and dress.
  • Appeared as one of three images that accompanied an article written by the photographer, entitled "Don't Civilize Our Indians" Published in 1939.

Dwelling

Photograph is of a very large tepee, made up of what would appear to be numerous animal hides sewn together. Difference in texture is outstanding. There are rocks piled about the bottom of the outside to hold sides down. This dwelling is set up in the middle of a flat, grassy landscape.

Encampment

Photograph of the encampment of the shipwrecked crew of the SS. Eldorado on a desolate island. Tents are pitched on rock, with very little else. The Hudsons' Bay is seen in the background.

Encampment

Photograph is of an encampement of four Cree men, dressed in western style clothing, sitting on a hillside over looking GWR. They have pitched a tepee to the right, and there are boxes of supplies to the left. The men all have their backs to the viewer, as they watch a small ship make its way ashore.

Photograph is a close up image of a fox caught in a fur trader's trap. The fox looks directly at the viewer. It is centrally located in the image, the background consists of snow and fir trees.

Photograph is similar to L-3; there is a centrally placed fox caught in a fur trader's trap. It looks toward the viewer. The fox is in a setting of snow and fir trees.

Fur Trapper

Photograph depicts Chesterfield himself (?) standing over a dead fox, in a grassy field, with some snow. Chesterfield is dressed in tall fur boots, dark baggy pants, and a white coat trimmed in a three stripe pattern, with his hood thrown back. He is smoking a pipe and looking at the body of the fox rather then at the viewer.
