From 1887 to 1896 he was the vice-president of the Bank of Montreal and served as the de facto president from 1897 and the president from 1905.

Wagstaff from the painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence P.R.A, published by Hodgson & Graves Printsellers by Appointment to Her Majesty (6 Pall Mall, London), of John George Lambton Durham, born 1792 and died 1840, was a British politician elected to the Commons in 1813 and elevated to the Lords in 1828. He was a significant part of the Reform Bill of 1832 but retired in 1833 before becoming ambassador to Russia 1835 to 1837. In 1838 he went to Lower Canada to research the causes of the twin rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada and published his Report on the Affairs of British North America in 1839.
