The former recounts among many, the story, based on letters home, of Robert Harkness' adventures with the famous cross-country trek of the Overlanders. The latter tells the story, based largely on letters he wrote home as well, of Donald Norval Eddy's time in England and France, as a Captain with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, during World War Two. 'Thomas Henry Race, 1845-1924', tells the remarkable story of her paternal grandfather, from his days as an eye-witness at the Battle of Gettysburg, to his move to Mitchell, Ontario, where he began publishing the 'Mitchell Recordor', to his time as a Trade Commissioner, as a result of a political appointment arranged by Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier, attending a large Exhibition in New Zealand. 'Letters of a Subaltern', divided into three parts, contain letters (1941-1945) home from the front during World War Two, from her husband-to-be, Robert C. Eddy.

The manuscript was discovered some years ago in a castle near Tours, France. There appears to be a similarity between this document and the text of 'Relation de la prise des forts de Choueguen ou Oswego,et de ce qui s'est passe cette annee en Canada. 1756.' The second text was printed by Cuchet, Grenoble, France.

Fonds consists of correspondence, to and from, his parents, his wife Elizabeth Tatchell, and numerous friends and colleagues; subject files; diaries; manuscripts; books and articles; addresses and lectures; records relating to his time as an Historical Officer in the Canadian Army during the Second World War, as a professor in the department of History at Queen's University at Kingston, and his Retirement Dinner in 1970 from Queen's; and photographs. There is also a very interesting series of letters relating to Captain John Hamilton Brown, as well as an armband of the Dutch Forces of the Interior.

The collection consists of non-photographic, panoramic maps of various Canadian cities and urban centres including Halifax, Lunenburg, Moncton, Montreal, Sherbrooke, Sorel, Brantford, Kingston, London, Ottawa, Port Arthur, Simcoe, St. Catharines, Tillsonburg, Toronto, Morris, Winnipeg, Victoria, and Yukon. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, major Canadian cities and urban centres followed a North American trend in having panoramic maps - more commonly called bird's-eye views - prepared. These non-photographic illustrations viewed cities from above at an oblique angle - a remarkable achievement in the days before aerial photography. They showed street patterns, major landscapes, and a variety of structures including churches, mansions, single dwellings, industrial plants, office blocks, retail and wholesale businesses, and government buildings.

Fonds consists of correspondence, subject files, published and unpublished material, clippings, course notes, speeches, and an audio recording of Dr. Swainson's lectures. The material represents his academic work and other scholarly interests, particularly his specialized knowledge on Canadian Confederation history with an emphasis on the life and times of Sir John A. Macdonald, John Diefenbaker, James Richardson of Kingston, the Garson Family of Winnipeg; and Garden Island.
