Letter from Amyot to Ryland

A short letter, in which Amyot congratulates Ryland on his handling of a political crisis in Canada, and discussed British politics.

Inscription on the New Monument erected at the Source of the St Croix on the 31st July, 1817

Item is a lithograph illustration from a sketch by Col. Bouchette, done on July 31st, 1817. On the left, under the picture is written, On Stone by L. Haghe. The following passage details the monument's inscription: N. Face: Col. Jos Bouchette H.B.M. Sur. Genl. Var 73 degrees 51"2" West. E Face: New Brunswick July 31.1817. printed in the same manner. S. Face: John Johnson, U.S. Surveyor & S.G.V.T. W. Face: United States 31 July 1817. At the bottom of the Monument on the East and West Faces are two Stones inclined marked respectively with the initials of the surveyors, the date & also the initials of the different Territories, viz on the West side N.B (New Brunswick) 31, July 1817. JB (Joseph Bouchette), on the East side U.S. (United States) 31, July 1817, J.J. (John Johnson) the whole printed in capital letters.

Letter from Amyot to Ryland

This letter shows the contemporary system of appointment in the colonial service in action. Amyot has received a letter from Bishop Mountain, written at Ryland's instigation, recommending the latter's son for the position of deputy to Amyot, who explains that he has already offered the position to his own younger brother.

This letter concerns the procedure to be followed in the not unlikely event of the death of Mr. J. Taylor, an associate of Ryland's in the government of the colony. Amyot mentions the nation's unaffected grief at the death of the Princess Charlotte.
