Kingston as Capital Clippings

  • CA ON00239 F2167
  • Discrete Item
  • 1843-1857

From 1843 to 1857 the capital of Canada had moved between Kingston, Montréal, Toronto and Quebec City. Seeing as agreement on a permanent capital was so contentious, the matter was deferred to the young Queen Victoria. The 2 pocketbooks contain articles about the proposed locations of the capital of Canada, reflecting the decidedly biased opinion that Kingston would be the best choice due to the City's location, security and lifestyle.

Brief article discussing Magdeleine de Vercheres and the dedication of a monument in her name on the banks for the St. Lawrence.-Includes hand written and typed draft-Name else where documented as Marie-Madeleine de Verchères. The date cited in the article appears to be inaccurate. Outside information indicates that the attack for which she is recognised, occurred in 1692, not 1696 as stated in the article.
