McLaughlin's life --and to some extent that of his family as well-- is documented through correspondence, legal and financial records, subject files, and photographs from the time of his entering into partnership with his brother R. Samuel McLaughlin, to the period following his retirement from the automotive business.

The papers reflect Dr. Dyde's strong interests in Shakespeare as a scholar; his approach to religion in his sermons and his creativity in the poetry, notes and studies, and essays and addresses. There is a good deal of political commentary in the essays and addresses.
