Macdonald (1815-1891) was born in Glasgow but came to Upper Canada, with his parents in 1820. He was educated at the Royal Grammer School, Kingston and was called to the bar in 1836. In 1844 he was elected member of the Legislative Assembly for Kingston. He was Receiver-General in the Draper-Administration (1847-1848) and ten years later became Prime Minister in the Macdonald-Cartier ministry. He was the Dominions first Prime Minister. He married Isabelle Clarke (d.1848) and then Susan Agnes Bernard.
