There are also records of the many academic conferences Dr. Thorburn attended and helped to organize, committee work he was engaged in and records of his students. Taken together the records of Hugh Garnet Thorburn document his life as a scholar from his undergraduate days to his years as Professor Emeritus at Queen's University's Department of Political Studies.

The correspondence includes letters he wrote to his father, mother and sister in Scotland, and later to his wife in Edwardsburgh. Also includes an obituary notice of his son's (1949).

The collection consists of letters to Quetton St. George circa 1810. Hugh was a clerk in the general store of Laurent Quetton St George in York in 1807 and soon assumed responsibility for the Niagara branch of the business. In 1810, he was transferred to Kingston. The letters are of a business nature.
