Item is an electro-steel engraving of Hugo Grotius, born 1583 and died 1645, Dutch jurist who laid the foundations for international law, based on natural law. Engraved by J. Posselwhite from an original picture by J. Mirevelt in the possession of the publisher. Published under the superintendance of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge by Charles Knight (Ludgate Street, London).

He was also a prominent Colonel in the Lower Canada Rebellion and Police Magistrate at Montreal and Adjutant-General to the Militia of Lower Canada.

"Born in Scotland in 1861, educated in Clifton and Oxford, and joined the 7th Hussars in 1885. He has fought in Egypt and South Africa, and has done brilliant work, especially in leading cavalry, in the present campaign."
