Biographical history

William Wilberforce (1759-1833) was the son of a Hull merchant. He was educated at Cambridge and entered Parliament in 1780. In 1789 he made the first of his many proposals in the House of Commons for the abolition of the slave trade but it was not until 1807 that the Act embodying these proposals was carried.
