History

William S. Peruniak was born in Port Arthur, Ontario to Anna Zurba and Steven Haschyn. He attended Queen's University at the age of 15 and graduated with a B.Ed. He taught in Kenora and then at KCVI, where he coached the Boy's Curling Team to win the national high school championship in 1957. By the age of 30 he was principal of Atikokan High School. There he established the Outers Program in 1965, a program that became a catalyst for incorporating outdoor education into the regular curriculum of public schools across the country. In 1967 he returned to Kingston as founding Associate Dean to the Faculty of Education.
