Ku Klux Klan in Canada

Personal letter from Batterson

Handwritten. Reads "Mr. WH Hutchison I got your letter… found 3 men wanting to claim it… Williams and Hunt back but Hunt back gave in and if it belong to him he didn't want it so I got it and sent it to you. There is no… to you hope everything is satisfactory. We are all well hope to find you the same. Yours, WH Jamason". At the bottom, handwriting reads: "I don't think any of the claims is any good but yours".

Bulletin No. 40.

Addressed to "Faithful and Esteemed Klansmen and Klanswoman". Begins with addressing the large "Publishing House in Ontario" that is "interested in our Anglo-Saxon Movement", that will publish a paper in their interest and financed by subscriptions from members. This "official paper" will help spread articles of instructions to members and others interested in the principles of their movement. The Publishing House has requested the Organization to supply material relative to their work, and they will publish items of current topics and general news. The weekly paper would cost $2.00 per year. Further addresses reports that there are too many that are "not" interested in the Klan, but use it as a "centre to air their family quarrels and social differences". This will only humiliate the Klan in "the eyes of the alien world". They thus need more members who will live up to their obligations, and work in Clannish unison. Signed by George Marshall, Imperial Wizard, and J.S. Lord, Imperial Kligrapp.

Minutes of Meeting

Handwritten notes titled "Minutes of Meeting, Oshawa Ont May 11 1925". Reads "Called to order at 8pm Clansman Elliott after candidates being initiated. Regularly moved by that Clansman". Mentions someone being appointed to a committee to "provide necessary paraphernalia upon motion and the motion carried". Also mentions Clansman Higett through Clansman Elliott that Higett could not intend, and should authorize another speakers. This motion carried. There is a check mark written over each paragraph. Second page mentions a motion carried unanimously that the name of Oshawa Clan no.4 be known as "Prince George".

Part of a Bulletin

Seems to be a page that continues from a bulleting. Starts at Eight; the military features have not be set up yet; Nine, to follow schedule for open air demonstration and naturalization ceremony. Then lists First; a Committee of Klavern, which must mark the ground for Quadrates, that Exalted Cyclops stand must be 4 ft. high and large enough for small table and chair, and a large flag should be mounted at the stand, also that an altar for Fiery Cross must be next to E.C., and finally that Klaliff, Kludd, and Klokard stations be same height as E.C. and larger enough for officers to stand on; Second, that the committee must be prepared to work; Third, the Committee of Grounds must police the field and wear robes; Fourth, the Committee of Publicity must let reporters know of the ceremonies, but only Protestant reporters, and are to be escorted in cars to 200 yds. from klavern and kept there until Dedication Ceremony takes place, then may remain and take pictures during the ceremony at a distance; Fifth, the Committee of Refreshments must ensure there are refreshments; Sixth, the Committee of Fiery Cross must provide, erect, and handle the Fiery Cross, outlining that the cross should be 40 to 50 ft. high, with arms at least 20 ft. across, wrapped in burlap and soaked in kerosene all day; Seventh, the Committee of Candidates should be on the grounds early and take registration of all Klans and Kleagles. Signed Lewis Fowler, Imperial Kligrapp.

"Dr. C. Lewis Fowler"

Titled "Dr. C. Lewis Fowler Sends Special Message to All Klansmen and Klanswomen in Canada". First, that in coming up to the Klonvocation, they are taking "the most important steps in the history of the Cause in Canada"; Two, that "no man can feel as I do toward this cause. I have the honor of being its Father in Canada. As such I have a right as well as a sacred obligation to think of it and to speak of it; hence this message. I have no personal ambitions, I crave no office, do not desire to be the Imperial Wizard, for with my own hands I wrote into the Laws the Words, the Imperial Wizard must be a native born Canadian citizen [...] But I have never had but one desire, viz; that of a great Organization set up in Canada [...] To this end I have given my pledge to the Committee that I will return here, will be in the Kloncovation and that I will remain as long as it is the will of the members in Klonvocation assembled for me to remain and train the men elected in all the Orders [...] I have delivered in trust the higher orders to a trust committee to hold for this body until they are ready for them. I am ready and willing to serve when the right kind of men are placed about me in the work"; Third, that he has given his life for this work, and wish the newly elected men will be men of experience; Fourth, that he urges them to come to Klonvocation and to "distribute the Kloncilium all over the Dominion so as to represent each and every section"; Five, that he feels that only he has "the obligation and the right to send this personal message"; and Six, that he hope he stirs their "pure minds by way of remembrance Future generations will be pleased if we are big, and true and wise now". Signed C. Lewis Fowler.
