The fonds consists of photographs taken between 1900 and 1950. Almost all of the buildings have either gone or have been so altered as to be almost unrecognisable now; the same might be said of the people. The mills and the rafting and dredging company were principal sources of employment at one time. In the early part of the century these went out of business. After that there seems to have been some tourist trade but not nearly enough to make much local employment. By the time the photograph of the section hands was taken they were very nearly the only regularly employed working men in the village. There was, of course, some farm work available on the surrounding farms, but most men had to depend on commuting to Kingston for work, if there was work to be found. For many years the railway provided the best access to Kingston and the station was an important part of the community. High school students, for example, travelled daily to Kingston by train to attend school. The opening of the highway made motor traffic a much more viable option for commuters and brought the little self contained village closer to the bed room suburb that it has now become. The collection is comprised of sixty letters written during the years of 1843 to 1872 to George Copeman in England.Fifty-three are original letters, four are copies of the originals which are housed in the Dr. Albert E Senkler, (EJS’s son) collection at the Minnesota Historical Museum in St Paul, and three that were transcribed by hand by his grandson Edmund J Reynolds ( EJR) but the whereabouts of the originals is no longer known.

Transcriptions of the original letters are also available and appear to have been transcribed by EJR, perhaps in the 1920s.

The drawings represent heritage buildings in many towns and regions in southern Ontario such as Adolphustown, Bath, Claireville, Cobourg, Cornwall, Grafton, Islington, Kingston, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Perth, Port Hope and Toronto. Two northern towns are represented by North Bay and Penetanguishene. The drawings represent a variety of structures from churches, clubs and rectories to commerical buildings, factories and mills. The material is organized alphabetically according to town or region.

Collections consists of Memorial Books relating to both Lorne and Edith Pierce; travel diaries; photographs; and a copy of Edith Chown Pierce's, "Canadian Glass: A Footnote to History". Nearly every Canadian literary figure of note for the period 1920 to 1960 is representedby at least some manuscript material in this collection. Among its many highlights the collection includes the letters and manuscripts of William Wilfred Campbell; Desertion in Canada by Major John Richardson; the original manuscript of William Kirby's novel, The Golden dog; manuscripts written and decorated by Wilson Macdonald; letters, manuscripts and memorabilia of Sir Charles G. D. Roberts; and the Marjorie Pickthall papers which include her diaries, letters manuscripts and sketches. Also represented are Raymond Knister, Duncan Campbell Scott, Archibald Lampman, Camille Roy, Stephen Leacock, Marius Barbeau,Audrey Alexandra Brown, Earle Birney, Katherine Hale, A. J. Pratt and Al Purdy. Some papers of artists J.E. H. Macdonald, A. Y. Jackson, C.W. Jefferys and Thoreau Macdonald are included in this collection.
