Canadian Patriotic Fund

Series contains a valuable collection of records and documents relating to the work of this fund. In addition to correspondence, there are financial records, visitor's records cards and printed material relating to the work of the fund.

County Council Minutes

Series consists of printed minutes for the County of Frontenac. This section contains an incomplete set of minutes from 1909 to 1955. Bound volumes of minutes (1842-1967) are filed in the Oversize Series.

County Bylaws

Series consists of bylaws created for the County of Frontenac. The bylaws are arranged chronologically. In addition there are bound volumes of bylaws in the Oversize series.

Financial Records

Series documents sorted into several sub-series including budgets, auditors' reports, taxes and Finance Committee reports. Several bound volumes of financial records are filed in Oversize Volumes series.

Tenders

Series contains files on heating fuel, work and machinery for roads and bridges, sale of county property, printing and office supplies and provisions for the jail (1862-1954). A very important section relates to the physical alterations to the court house and jail and registry office (1855-1965). In addition there is a file on alterations to toll gates in 1855, including some sketches of toll gate houses.

Elections

Series consists of records relating to country elections from 1850 to 1965. This series contains results of individual elections, clerk's certificates relating to the election of reeves and deputy reeves and signed declarations by incoming wardens. An important section of this series contains voters' lists for many townships for the 1970s.

Oversize - Financial (bound assessment rolls)

Series contains assessment rolls for fifteen townships (1880 to 1928), reports on the Agriculture Society (1852 to 1950), Auditor's reports (1888 to 1913), Bylaws (1842 to 1880), Minutes (1842-1967), punishment and inspector's reports from the jail (1872 to 1884), Old Age Pension Board Minutes (1931 to 1948), maps, blueprints for bridges, census of Portsmouth (1858), toll road leases and miscellaneous voter's lists (1853 to 1966).

Subject Files

Series contains files on approximately fifteen major subjects and a number of minor ones. The files on agriculture cover the period from 1843 to 1969 and include material on exhibitions dating back to the earliest date. A number of files on the Children's Aid Society (dealing with administrative matters only) relate to the years 1870 to 1969. The county property files include correspondence and committee reports from 1850 to 1965. Extensive records on the court house and jail date from 1850 to 1965. Another section relates to health and welfare and homes for the aged. Another section contains petitions. The subjects of the petitions range from a broken toll gate (1852) to the construction of a teacher's college (1852), a Wolfe Island Ferry (1852), and roads, bridges, toll roads and booths (1844 to 1965). This invaluable collection of petitions illustrates many of the problems of rural life and is of great importance for the social historian. Other files relate to pipeline construction, railways, census statistics (including one for Portsmouth Village in 1858), and weed control. In addition there are files on many aspects of the First and Second World War (including great production of food, returning soldiers, gasoline rations, meat rations, and the Memorial Committee).

Correspondence

Series consists of 1 metre of chronologically arranged files. Most of this correspondence is of a routine nature. In addition there are .5 metres of subject correspondence with files on such topics as utilities, winter works programmes, the St. John Ambulance and Women's Institutes. Correspondence on specific subjects such as "Roads and Bridges" and "Elections" are arranged in Roads and Bridges series and Elections series respectively.

Roads and Bridges

Series contains files relating to individual roads and bridges throughout the County. In addition there are files of correspondence and bylaws relating to these subjects. An interesting section relates to toll roads (1850 to 1907). Another important section contains studies and documents relating to the proposed International Bridge from Cape Vincent to Kingston. This series also contains a substantial collection of Roads and Bridges Committee Reports for the period from 1853 to 1972. Other files relate to the closure of roads, claims against the county for roads in disrepair, the purchasing of machinery for road work, ferries and waterways (including the Wolfe Island Ferry, 1850 to 1860), traffic laws and snow removal. Occasionally maps are attached to documents.
