Captain John Pepper Downes, 1801-1878. During the nineteenth century, Captain Downes was a prominent citizen of Picton, holding such positions as Justice of the Peace, Captain of the Local Militia and County Clerk Treasurer. His residence, after 1857, is still preserved at the corner of Downes Avenue and Main Street, Picton.
